Potter Dame Lucie Rie had great depth of spirit, according to Bonhams contemporary ceramics director Cyril Frankel, who was a close friend of hers. She had an astounding gift for understanding the feelings of others, and was able to lift their spirits. Frankel is currently managing a sale dedicated to her work at Bonhams. He hopes that the best items will be purchased by museums, thus ensuring that he can borrow them to use in exhibitions.

The British keep their heads down

Christie's sale of Felicien Rops erotic engravings in Dec 1992 was probably the last sale of erotica in Britain. Continentals have a tradition of erotic art which does not exist in the UK. There is not much erotica in Britain and British taste for kinkiness limits the market. Bonhams held erotic art auctions until 1990. General sales include erotica by famous artists but those who do only erotic pictures will go unknown in the UK.

Oriental carpets have two markets, one for collectors and one for furnishing. Collectors choose old carpets and may hang them on the wall rather than use them on the floor. Furnishers are often seeking a carpet to go with other furnishings. They prefer symmetrical patterns and darker colours. Pale colours and garish colours are unpopular. Some rugs are suitable for collectors or furnishers.
