Article Abstract:
The Law Society's Commerce and Industry Group (C and I)is organising roadshows to promote work opportunities, particularly for solicitors with three to five years' experience. The roadshow format is similar to BBC1's 'Question Time'. In commerce solicitors are in a multidisciplinary team at the centre of the business with the chance to see problems before they happen. The Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee recommended that employed solicitors should not be granted increase in rights of audience as they would not have sufficient experience of appearing in higher courts. The C and I Group Chairman, Mr Bob Downey, thinks the choice should be available.

London law firm Theodore Goddard commissioned research into investment in central and eastern Europe. Over 200 companies surveyed considered Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland would belong to the EC by 2003, with Russia following. Sixty-two per cent already invest there. Baker & McKenzie opened an office in Budapest, Hungary in 1987 which has 14 lawyers in 1992. It does privatisation work for Czechoslovakia from the London office. Clyde & Co have an office in St Petersburg, Russia for commercial transactions.

Article Abstract:
Many lawyers are now developing a more positive attitude towards working in a company legal department. Such departments can offer many interesting opportunities, particularly to lawyers who have recently qualified. There are more fringe benefits than in private practice, and in-house lawyers can gain valuable experience in commercial work.
