Mary Hartnoll, Glasgow's director of social work, has been very shocked by the extremely hostile reaction to the leaked internal memo in which she claimed that Ecstasy is a relatively safe drug. She is determined to stick to her views, pointing out that the risk of death from Ecstasy has been calculated at one in 6.8 million, much lower than that of dying of aspirin. Her approach should be welcomed, as it is now time to recognise that drugs are an increasingly significant aspects of national life in the UK.

Former UK Labour party minister Barbara Castle was once a socialist heroine, attracting many admirers with her powerful rhetoric. She has recently come to public attention once more with her opposition to the pension plans being put forward by Harriet Harman. Castle is calling for an increase in pensions for both the right and poor, a move which would cost 5.5 billion pounds sterling. In contrast, Harman believes that any available funds should be targeted on the poorest pensions.

Party leader Tony Blair's speech was widely hailed as a triumph, even though it lacked any intellectual content and contained many homilies. The general aim is to make voters feel confident about opting for the Labour party. However, there remains an unspoken fear about the possibility of the Conservative party managing to win yet another election.
