Article Abstract:

A female patient aged 32 lost her voice and had changes in pitch and gaps in her speech. She had to change to work not needing speech. She was referred to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. A fibre optic endoscope revealed spasms in the speech muscles. Botulinum A toxin, one of the most poisonous substances, was injected in minute amounts until the woman's voice improved. It is marketed by Porton Products Ltd and can be used for other dystonias.

Self-cleansing power

Article Abstract:

A powerful mixture of microbes could prove effective in cleaning up desert areas of Kuwait which were polluted with oil during the Gulf war of 1991. Researchers at Kuwait University have already found signs of self-cleansing activity by microbes in other polluted areas, and are now looking at how the same microbes can be used in the Kuwaiti desert. It is now planned to spray the scavenging bateria over the polluted desert.

Techniques of molecular genetics have revolutionised biological and medical science since 1983. Many diseases have been traced to mutated genes. Carriers can be identified and genetic engineers can clone desirable genes. There is social danger in attributing human behaviour to genes alone.
