Digital television will mark a significant step in the information revolution, though there is a debate as to what its impact will be. Some analysts see computers as important for interactivity to develop, while others have doubts about the role of PCs. Microsoft has sought to enter the TV industry but the industry is concerned that a monopoly operating system could develop. British Digital Broadcasting has been awarded the United Kingdom franchise for new UK frequencies for commercial digital TV.

The launch of three satellites will take place in November 1996 for the 4.5 billion pounds sterling Iridium project led by Motorola, the leading maker of mobile telephones in the world. In January 1997 three more satellites will be launched. A total of 66 satellites will be launched by the end of 1998, enabling satellite to satellite communications. The main obstacle is signing agreements with international governments so that the system can be globalised.

Microsoft has worked extremely hard for several years to ensure that its new Windows 95 operating system, which it is now about to launch, will be successful. The launch has been considerably delayed, but Microsoft was determined to ensure that the product was right. It has made extensive localisation efforts, and will make the product available in more than 20 languages.
