Jose Maria Ruiz-Mateos, 62, is an independent candidate for Spanish prime minster and is head of the Ruiz-Mateos Group whose campaign slogan is 'Let's get out of Europe.' He has recently been the target of a gunman. He was a member of the mysterious Opus Dei movement for 20 years and says he gave them a total of up to 26 million pounds sterling. He accuses the movement and prime minister Felipe Gonzalez of plotting to destroy his business empire in 1983. He is known as Superman due to his dressing up as the cartoon character to obtain public attention.

Former head of Ferruzzi Raul Gardini committed suicide when fraud was exposed: Ferruzzi had paid commissions to Spanish Socialist Politicians for the olive oil company Elosua. Antibioticos S A, owned by Mario Conde, was supposed to be free of foreign control, but the Italian company Montedison paid $453 million for it. The name of the former Socialist Party accountant Aida Alvarez, 35, appears in cases of financial irregularities.

Leader of the Spanish Popular Party (PP) Jose Maria Aznar, 39, began an unofficial election campaign in Barcelona in Nov 1992 as Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez is required to call an election by Oct 1993. Gonzalez' Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) lost its outright majority in 1989 and the PP is gaining popularity. Mr Aznar's campaign will attack socialists' corruption and the economic crisis. He is pro European union as long as national identities are respected.
