Article Abstract:
It is often said in the cinema world that great books do not make great films, but director Volker Schlondorff has proved this wrong in his case. So often the presence of the great writer overshadows the creativeness of the director to restrict him. Schlondorff has overcome this in a number of successes including Proust's Swann in Love, the only Proust that has been made into a film. He says he finds most screenplays sub-standard although he does not know why in many cases.

Article Abstract:
Thomas Hardy's novel 'Jude the Obscure' is very bleak, but is still a love story about ideals, according to film-maker Michael Winterbottom, whose film version of the novel, entitled 'Jude,' is to be released shortly. The film features dark, uninviting landscapes and unattractive towns, and the characters appear to be haunted. The book has a contemporary setting, and this made Winterbottom feel justified in using modern language.

Article Abstract:
Hollywood films portraying sexual relations which were released in 1995 tend to show women in very strong roles. These include the character of Onnatop in 'Goldeneye,' the latest James Bond film, and Sigourney Weaver in Polanski's 'Death and the Maiden'. Lesbian cinema had a high profile in 1995, although these films very generally not of very high quality.
