A blueprint for schools under Labour

Article Abstract:

Education has now become a key political issue in the UK, and an incoming Labour government would have to be seen to take decisive action in this area. It should consider obliging local authorities to provide nursery places for all three- and four-year-olds, as the early years in education are vital to future success. It should undertake an audit of primary schools, ensuring that buildings are improved and extended where necessary. High priority must be given to reducing class sizes. Attention must also be given to teacher training and improving the performance of children who under-achieve.

Tearaways need schools, too

Article Abstract:

St Francis school in Hooke, Dorset, UK has 30 boys, labelled as difficult, and 31 staff and is threatened with closure in July 1992 unless 250,000 pounds sterling can be found to support it for the next two years. The cost of 21,000 pounds sterling per pupil can no longer be afforded by local education authorities. Some of the boys have reacted violently to the prospect, others have broken down in tears. St Francis was set up in 1946 by the Franciscan friars and the proposal for closure is from the Church of England's National Society, trustees for its caretaking.
