A bleak prospect for Crystal Palace

Article Abstract:

A proposed hotel to be erected on the site of Crystal Palace in south London is, at first glance, very similar to the original building destroyed by fire in 1936. However, the Royal Fine Art Commission is angry about the whole matter. They want the site, which contains only a few remnants of Joseph Paxton's original structure, to be scheduled as an ancient monument. A private member's bill in parliament was needed to amend the Crystal Palace Act which demands the site is left undeveloped.

The mandarins meet their match

Article Abstract:

The Royal Fine Art Commission (RFAC) has no powers over plans for new building but its influence is usually effective. In 1991 2/3 of proposals were changed because of its opinion. However, the pseudo-Classical office development for Paternoster Square in the City of London, England has been approved despite the RFAC's objections. The RFAC depends on the networking skills of chairman Lord St John. It advocates aesthetic design of good quality.
