Most barristers are aware that the issue of when and how to leave the Bar is a difficult one, according to Robert Webb, who has been appointed general counsel at British Airways. He enjoyed certain aspects of life as a barrister, but wanted to try something different. He feels that he would not have been able to go on to become a judge, as he would not have been able to show the patience, impartiality and great diligence required of judges. He has gained considerable respect for his performance in court, being particularly good at knowing how to handle judges.

He believes that his views stem from his working class background, where he felt some social injustice. He welcomes the opportunity to be able to discuss human rights with government ministers and civil servants while still retaining the freedom to criticize the government on television. He has been able to boost the public standing of Liberty, even among interest groups that may previously have dismissed it.

He places strong emphasis on professionalism and objectivity. He wanted to be a barrister from an early age, and wishes to ensure that others from modest backgrounds have this opportunity.
