It is extremely distressing that illiteracy rates remain very high in Haiti, especially among women, according to novelist Edwidge Danticat. She was born in Haiti, and lived there until the age of 12, when she joined her parents in New York, NY. She recalls finding it very difficult to adjust to living with her parents and to being among strangers. She emphasizes that there is a strong matriarchal sense in Haitan life, and this is reflected in her novel 'Breath, Eyes, Memory.'
