A Bible publisher sought publicity and, lo, he found controversy

Canongate Books Managing Director Jamie Byng has attracted considerable controversy with 'The Pocket Canons,' a new mini Bible series. There have been strong objections from Christians about the personal interpretations contained in the books in this series alongside the text of the Authorized King James version of the Bible. The interpretations are written by a Buddhist, a Jew and atheists. Byng believes that it is exciting for the Bible to be published in this way, and regrets that some have taken a fundamentalist approach.

Art theft has become an extremely profitable international criminal activity, and the Art Loss Register's list of stolen works is currently worth more than 1 billion pounds sterling. Most recently, two paintings by Van Gogh and one by Cezanne were stolen from the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, Italy. This theft was very unusual in that a gun was used. There are differing views among experts about whether the paintings were stolen to order and will go to a private collection.

Many psychoanalysts now believe that events in a politician's childhood can have a significant impact on how that politician behaves in later life. This view has been expressed most strongly in a recent psychobiography of UK Labour party leader Tony Blair by Leo Abse, a highly respected psychoanalyst. He believes that Blair was greatly affected by the shame felt by his father, who was illegitimate, and by the fact that his father was paralysed by a stroke.
