Fund manager Jayesh Manek began investing in the stock market in a very small way, starting with a number of privatization issues and then moving on to other sectors of the market. However, he showed considerable talent for picking the most profitable stocks, as reflected in the fact that he won almost 250,000 pounds sterling in prize money over two years in a Fantasy Fund Manager competition run by a national Sunday newspaper. He now runs an investment portfolio for investor Sir John Templeton. He has also set up the Manek Growth Fund, a unit trust which uses the stock selection methods he has developed.

Tracking the performance of shares selected by a cat, using pieces of dry cat food on a numbered grid, produces some interesting results. In the six months from Aug 1996, the value of the shares selected by the cat has risen by 3.05%, compared with a rise of 4.06% for the FTSE mid-250 index as a whole. In the three months to Feb 04, 1997, the cat's shares rose by 4.4%, from 2.3% for the mid-250 index as a whole. The portfolio includes both household names, such as Dalgety and Body Shop, and less well-known companies, such as ML Laboratories and Mercury World Mining.

The Independent newspaper has devised a method of selecting stocks using Schrodinger, a cat. The cat makes stock selections by choosing pieces of dried cat food from a numbered grid. A small companies portfolio assembled in this way saw a rise of 4.35% in the year to Aug 12, 1997, compared with a rise of 3.25% for the average fund in the small companies sector and 0.37% for the funds' benchmark index. This method has also been used successfully for the UK equities growth sector.
