Article Abstract:
A rally held in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, to mark the 8th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 attracted up to 55,000 Hong Kong residents. Many have expressed their determination to uphold democratic rights in Hong Kong when it comes under Chinese sovereignty. Some key figures in the democracy movement have even gone as far as to state that civil disobedience may be required if Hong Kong is to continue to support the democracy movement in China. Those attending the rally called for the release of dissidents and an end to single party dictatorship.

Article Abstract:
The Chinese Communist party is likely to step up activity in Hong Kong after the colony reverts to Chinese sovereignty, despite official statements to the contrary. It has been present in Hong Kong for around 50 years, although it has kept a very low profile. Its work there is centred around the New China News Agency, which acts as China's embassy in Hong Kong, as a news agency, and as the centre of the Hong Kong and Macau Work Committee. It is a central point for controlling a network of pro-Chinese publications.

Article Abstract:
The influence of top business leaders in Hong Kong has waned slightly in recent years as a new generation of elected politicians and professionals has emerged. China has rewarded long-standing business supporters with top posts in the new administration, and has also recognised trade unionists and professionals.
