48 hours in the heart of Havana

Article Abstract:

The city of Havana, Cuba, can be reached relatively quickly from the UK. It has a range of tourist accommodation, including the Plaza and Inglaterra, on Parque Central, where a double room costs around 60 pounds sterling. It is particularly interesting to walk east along Calle O'Reilly from the main square, thus gaining an insight into Cuba's colonial history. However, there are few shopping opportunities, and Havana's restaurants are generally rather unattractive.

Drumming up visitor interest

Article Abstract:

Jamaica achieved tourism earnings of $1.092 billion in 1996, and this total is expected to rise slightly in 1997. The tourist industry accounts for around 45% of foreign exchange earnings, and represents 15% of GDP. Jamaica attracted more than 1 million visitors in 1997, but there is still considerable potential for the tourist industry to expand further. The Jamaican Tourist Board is keen to emphasize that local people are very friendly.
