The ceremony marking the 85th anniversary of the first day of the battle of the Somme will take place at the Thiepval memorial in northern France. This event will including the reading of Wilfred Owen's 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' and Ivor Gurney's 'Behind the Line' by novelist Sebastian Faulks.

Private funds from France, the UK and the European Union will be used to construct a 1 million pounds sterling Somme visitor centre at Thiepval, France. This is in response to a significant rise in the number of visitors to the Somme and other battlefields of the first world war. The facility will include interactive displays and classrooms for visiting school parties. A charitable appeal aiming to raise around 300,000 pounds sterling will be launched in the UK in early 2000.
