Article Abstract:

The My Lai Massacre of 1968 is discussed in relation to American national discourse, with a focus on the challenge to American exceptionalism. A response to atrocities committed by Americans has been to regard them as inevitable aspects of war or as reflections of basic human ethical ambivalence.
