The myth of Asian-style democracy

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the character of the so-called Asian-style democracy or soft authoritarian regimes. Asian-style democracies are said to be unique in nature. They focus on the establishment of political regimes that support the unique conditions and cultures of the region. Such democracies also promote communitarian concerns basEd on the welfare of a group or individual. Results indicated that Asian-style democracies are regimes that have failed to complete their transition to democracy.

Toward concert in Asia

Article Abstract:

The dynamic rise of power and wealth in Asia and the decline of US influence in the region have created a need to develop strategies to make Asia benign and predictable. Changes such as the growth of China's political, military and economic strength in the region can be addressed by the US through delicate diplomatic policies. The US should also draw upon the lessons of the European Concert system in its efforts to promote self-reliance and reconciliation in Asia.

Cambodia and Burma: the ASEAN way ends here

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze changes in decision making and implementation in the Assn of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Domestic developments in Cambodia and Burma have created a number of challenges on the ASEAN paradigm and established ideas of soft regionalism. In addition, the internal affairs of other member sates have brought about governance issues on arms, refugees, drugs and third-party concerns.
