Teaching language through literature at the early stages: an NEH model for proficiency in French

Article Abstract:

Great works of literature can be profitably introduced to students of the French language even at very early stages of instruction. For an NEH project, nine members of the French faculty at the City University of New York (CUNY) developed 45 modules for using literary selections at all levels of study, beginning with first year French. Pre-reading activities provide a foundation for small-group reading probes conducted in class. Lessons associated with the reading of "Liberte" by Paul Eluard, "Le Cancre" by Jacques Prevert and other texts are discussed. A list of texts by levels is included.

A FLAC model for increasing enrollment in foreign language classes

Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC) is discussed as a way to encourage the study of foreign languages. Topics include FLAC models, the FLAC program at St. Mary's University, the one-room school house model, methods used to involve all students in language activities, methods used to involve all students in the literary texts, and student response to course content, methodology, and materials.

Integrating online techniques into undergraduate French language instruction

Article Abstract:

The use of distance learning techniques in undergraduate French language courses is discussed. Distance learning techniques include computer-mediated communication, Web-based grammar exercises, and distance editing.
