The principled believers in independence as well as the principled believers in unification with China are not numerous enough to give any elected Taiwanese leader clear mandate for imposing a solution on the question of national identity anytime soon. As long as Taiwan's electorate keeps the future of cross-trait relations open-ended, the status quo has a reasonably good chance of prevailing over either war or a peaceful reconciliation scenario.

The year 2007 reveals Taiwan's anxious wait for the 2008 Legislative Yuan election and the presidential election hoping for a dramatic shift in cross-strait relations and improving the stagnating economy. According to the new electoral system a clear-cut single-party legislative majority will be implemented and the voters will be in a position of cast a second ballot for a political party.
