Article Abstract:

Multilateralism can provide the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a new vision in meeting the challenges of the post-Cold War era. With the collapse of the USSR, Vietnam and Cambodia no longer pose a threat to the security of the region. However, China retains a considerable influence on Malaysian and Indonesian affairs. With military coalition, ASEAN can assert its role in shaping its own future. Countries such as Australia, the US and Canada can only support the gradual transformation of ASEAN but they can never intervene in regional affairs.
