Japan's Keidanren and political influence on market liberalization

Article Abstract:

The business association which holds the highest level of political influence in Japan is the Federation of Economic Organizations, called Keidanren. It exerts tremendous pressure on policy making bodies by providing them with written recommendations. It also influences decisions in indirect ways, such as giving financial donations, pressuring media and using ruling party connections. Keidanren, therefore, has a significant role in Japan's market liberalization.

Preferences and activities related to societal actors impinge on the evolution of states regional economic agreements under Keidanren's involvement in Japan's free trade agreements (FTA) with Singapore, Mexico, and South Korea. Keidanren's policy preferences and its commitments to the policymaking process in terms of FTA with the countries are analyzed.

Brunei in 2006: Not a bad year

Article Abstract:

Notable political changes were not witnessed in Brunei in 2006, with the sultan continuing to control the state. Several initiatives were launched in Brunei during 2006 to reduce youth unemployment and encourage diversification, and good relations were maintained with neighbors and multilateral allies.
