Effective government in Singapore: perspective of a concerned American

Article Abstract:

The Singaporean government is considered an effective development model as evidenced by the social and economic developments in the country. The system, however, limits political freedom and is occasionally criticized as repressive and autocratic. A comparison with the United States is also unapplicable in the political, social and global context. Moreover, American people take great pride in their economic, social and political freedom. America is called to give due respect and learn a lesson from other systems considering that the American system is also not ideal.

Relations with Malaysia were upset by a string of incidents that included oppositionist Tang Liang Hong's flight to Johor Bahru and friction between Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir and Lee Kuan Yew.
