C. Martin Wilbur (1907-1997)

Article Abstract:

C Martin Wilbur was the quintessential historian who never allowed history to be subservient to politics. The Dayton, OH-born former chairman of Columbia University's University Seminar on Modern China and Professor Emeritus of Chinese History grew up, not surprisingly, in China where he was the son of a YMCA family. Wilbur authored such books as 'Sun Yat-sen: Frustrated Patriot,' and 'The Nationalist Revolution and China, 1923-1928.' He died in Haverford, PA, on Jun 18, 1997.
