Attitudes toward democracy in Malaysia: challenges to the regime?

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted in November 1994 shows that the Malaysians remain divided on the question of democracy. The questions asked were both forced-option and open-ended. The respondents from both the capital and outside the capital thought that a responsible government was more necessary than individual rights. The respondents also supported a limited practice of democracy. The respondents feel that judiciary ought to be free from governmental influences. The ethnic differences are persisting among Malaysians, and the semi-democratic regime is likely to continue.

"Asian-style democracy": a critique from East Asia

Article Abstract:

East Asian countries have extolled the merits of the 'Asian-style democracy' as a tool for promoting economic and political development. On the contrary, the attributes of this type of democracy may even hinder economic growth. These characteristics include authoritarianism and the application of Confucian cultural traits. Moreover, analysts have criticized the continued dominance of political elites in the region.
