American musicology and "The Archives of Eden."

Article Abstract:

The condition of American musicology is comparable to the condition of American culture in general. It seems that America has become a great conservator of American art and literature but is not an active participant in their perpetuation as evidenced by the minimal output of original endeavor in such fields. George Steiner's 'The Archives of Eden' was right in proclaiming the impoverishment of American music save for the redeeming genius of jazz.

The transnational turn: rediscovering American Studies in a wider world

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the transnational tendencies in the culture and society of the United States are discussed. Particular attention is given to the works and life of Henry David Thoreau. It is emphasized that transnational concerns have become part of the American Studies.

The influence of Vladimir Nabokov's 'Lolita' on the field of American studies is discussed. It is argued that aspects of Nabokov's work parody the American dream.
