Article Abstract:
Pashtuns have traditionally been Afghanistan's most dominant ethnic group, controlling both the government and the economy. However, the fall of the Najibullah government in Apr. 1992 signalled the start of the Pashtuns' decline as the dominant ethnic group in the country. The Pashtuns are losing control of large chunks of the country and the number of Pashtuns serving in government institutions are declining. However, whether the Pashtuns will altogether lose their hold over Afghan society remains to be seen.

Article Abstract:
The social situation in Afghanistan may soon turn into complete anarchy if the transitional government does not take drastic actions to stop the civil war. National elections were slated in Jan 1993 but the event was expected to legitimize the existing political elite and not create a democratic leadership. Thus, the war may have ushered the demise of the communist regime but the social upheaval continues.
