Article Abstract:
An Italian-American food market, Giglio's in Detroit, MI, uses play frames to create a fictive experience of Italy through the merchants' stylized behavior. The main focus of activity is at the counter where fresh meat and cheeses are sold in face-to-face transactions. Italian customers are perceived as being more aggressive and demanding than other customers. The play frames enact themes of practical ability in negotiating a bargain, display of prosperity, the expression of personal problems and self-reflexive play purely for entertainment.
