Article Abstract:
French teachers who wish to incorporate the Francophone literature of sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean into their teaching face a challenge but not an insurmountable one if they are from smaller language departments with room for few specialized courses. The teachers may also not have much training in these texts but wish to underscore their uniqueness along with the usual texts of the French literature canon. Values espoused by black Francophone literature include the community, linguistic irregularity and the supernatural. In such literature female protagonists predominate.
