A nationalist turn in French cultural policy

Article Abstract:

A nationalist trend exists in French cultural policy as the country is joined more with the European Union. It both reflects and reinforces a specifically French response to anti-modern anxieties in the post-colonial era. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs was created in 1959. Recent initiatives draw on the heritage of the beginning of the Fifth Republic of which the creation of the ministry was a part and which was crucial to the development of state cultural policy as key for problems of social change and perceived cultural loss. This heritage allowed for defining such issues as national, to be addressed by the state.

Why do the French give their nouns gender?

Article Abstract:

French teachers should use the 'why' questions of students trying to gain proficiency to foster linguistic curiosity rather than becoming impatient because students ask them. Often, however, such teachers have no training in linguistic history and so do not have the answers readily accessible. Eight questions frequently asked by first-year French students and their answers are given. Examples are why the adjectives come after the nouns and why there are so many irregular verb forms.
