The Lighthouse building in Glasgow, Scotland, has been renovated to make it Scotland's Centre for Architecture Design and the City. An urban renewal project in the centre of Glasgow includes a new private and public housing development supported by Abbey National. The UK government must not reverse their decision to use brownfield sites for a large number of the new houses required by 2016. It seems likely Deputy Prime Minster John Prescott will have to announce the UK will need 5 million new houses by 2016 rather than his initial prediction of 4.4 million houses.

United Kingdom Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions has had to become involved in a dispute about housing building in Hampshire. He has been called to mediate between the authorities in Hampshire who will not agree where 50,000 new houses should be built. Labour controlled unitary authorities in Southampton and Portsmouth disagree with the Conservative led county council of Hampshire. Redevelopment work in centre of Birmingham, England, has improved access and the ambiance of the city for pedestrians.
