Clients and their advisors must ensure they specify in their contracts what they want from each other and how they plan to communicate with each other during the contract. A case between Mott Macdonald Group Ltd and the Urban Regeneration Agency and English Partnership (URA) was heard in the UK courts. The judge found the client and the consultant failed to exchange important information. It lead to the consultancy having to pay 18.5 million pounds sterling in damages. The courts decided URA would not have gone ahead with the project if they had known the true costs of paying for the work.

The UK landfill tax is designed to increase the use of environmentally-friendly waste disposal methods rather than inefficient landfill sites. Waste products will be taxed on weight apart from those which originate from some sources such as contaminated found or commercial mining. An increase in the illegal dumping of waste is expected following the tax's introduction.

Issues concerning methods of managing proposed housing developments planned to take place in flood-risk areas are discussed. Particular attention is given to legal and technical aspects of managing property developments in flood-risk areas.
