Article Abstract:
Changes to the European Union's legislation covering car manufacturers and dealers could result in an increase in activity in the U.K. motor trade property market. Under the new rules, dealers will not be tied to one maker. The plan is to make the industry more competitive. There are some 7,000 franchised motor dealers in Britain, but the number is set to fall rapidly, with manufacturers reducing their dealer networks. The growing number of multi-franchised sites is expected to increase activity in the motor trade property market, with many dealers seeking large, out-of-town sites and new leasehold opportunities set to emerge.

Article Abstract:
Turnover in the retail motor industry is increasing at a steady pace, with over half the turnover dominated by the to 20 groups. The cost of changing the vehicle registration letters each August is high, with the stockpiling of new vehicles. It is likely that twice-yearly changes will be introduced in 1998, and there may be a reintroduction of the regional identification marks. There is expected to be a transformation in the way cars are sold over the next few years, with manufacturers seeking more technically sophisticated and customer-oriented dealerships.
