Orbital operation

Article Abstract:

The second runway at Manchester Airport, England, will increase its capacity to 24 million. The area around the Airport will become more attractive to office occupiers particularly as the number of international flights are likely to increase. An extension of the Metrolink line into the centre of the city is being planned. Some 12 million pounds sterling will be invested, in the line, by the developer of the Trafford Centre. Work on the M60 Manchester Orbital should be finished by 1999. Local agents suggest the new road will increase development on the eastern side of the city.

A drive round the bend

Article Abstract:

Business parks are necessary because most of the UK's existing town centres cannot provide large floorplates, according to John Laing Property Director Chris Bond. This view is not shared by Friends of the Earth Senior Campaigner Roger Higman, who believes that moving away from existing town centres is generally not justified. Connex Rail Development and Planning Director Stephen Grant feels that it will be very hard for the government to reverse the strong trend towards car use.
