New approaches to transport

Article Abstract:

A national transport policy which sets down environmental targets to be achieved at local and regional level is now urgently required in the UK, according to a report commissioned by Transport 2000. It is important to recognise that policies such as increasing fuel prices through taxation and limiting the expansion in private car use can be effective, but only if they are applied on the basis of local conditions, not in the same way across the country. In certain cases, it is simply not possible to use a less environmentally-damaging means of transport than the car.

CPRE reveals driving need for better transport policies

Article Abstract:

There is now 2,848 sq km of land dedicated to roads in the UK, according to a report for CPRE. Transport decisions must be made in connection with their wider impact on land use, the report states, as each new road brings related demands for land for parking, service areas, garages and related facilities. Transport policy must now focus on how to reduce countryside loss and put land to more positive uses.
