Chaos on the roads

Article Abstract:

The repairs to the Hammersmith Bridge, London, England, are predicted to cost from two million to five million pounds sterling. The closure of the bridge in Feb 1997 has caused traffic congestion and delay which is not likely to be relieved until the bridge reopens in Mar 1999. Some observers suggest that the lack of funding for repair and maintenance has caused many of the bridges throughout London to deteriorate to a very poor standard. It is predicted that 75% of the bridges which require strengthening to cope with the 40-ton trucks have not yet undergone any remedial work.
