Scott Malkin is a 37-year-old American who came to Britain with the intention of introducing the new concept of upmarket factory outlets. In 1992 he established Value Retail which opened its first 14 million pounds sterling upmarket outlet at Bicester Village in Oxfordshire. Value Retail forecasts a turnover of 35 million pounds sterling in 1996. Bicester Village is 96% let, with retailers including Jigsaw, Joan & David and Polo Ralph Loren.

The aim of offering a whole day of entertainment as well as a wide range of shops has proved very popular with customers 50% who return to make another visit. The business is becoming more profitable despite companies from the USA introducing similar schemes.

Since its reopening as a factory outlet shopping centre The Galleria in Hatfield, England is proving to be more successful and further expansion is planned both in retail space and leisure facilities. To encourage new customers the management of the centre have aimed an extensive advertising specifically at those customers who are considered to be most likely to be interested in this type of retail centre.
