Best foot forward

Article Abstract:

Town centres have become increasingly pedestrianized because planners want the area to look more attractive, remove traffic congestion and fumes, and make it easier for shoppers to move around. However, a study of 20 UK town centres by Property Market Research Services reveals that pedestrianization is not always a good option. Newsagents and off-licences rely on visits from motorists, and delivery vans have problems in pedestrian areas. Costs of pedestrianization are reflected in higher rents and shoppers do not spend more money in pedestrian areas than in streets with cars.

One track mind

Article Abstract:

Tramlink, a light rail network, is being built in Croydon, England, at a cost of 200 million pounds sterling. The trams will cater for around 100,000 people who commute into the area daily and will run either along railway tracks or beside the road. Tramtrack Croydon and London Transport will oversee the whole project which should be completed at the end of 1999. The trams will provide a non-polluting alternative to the car but some observers fear that whilst the construction work is in progress businesses will suffer.
