Some leisure development is going ahead in Middlesbrough, England, with a library, and swimming pool being built in a joint private-public scheme. New outlets for public houses and bars are in demand but obtaining an operating license can be difficult. English Partnerships and the local authority are working together to find ways to improve the retailing industry in the town centre. They plan to improve the shopping environment and reorganise traffic to make the town more accessible. The construction of 220,000 sq ft of new retail space should start in Jan 1998 at Captain Cook Square.

Demand for retail outlets in the West End of London, England, is rising with rents increasing by 50% during 1996-97. Rental values for a premium outlet in Oxford Street have reached over 300 pounds sterling per sq ft. Retailers hope to take advantage of the increase in consumer spending. Local agents predict that the rent rises will force some less predominate retailers out of the Oxford Street area. Retailers with international reputations are keen to move into Bond Street which is known as an prime shopping location.

Retailers in Bromley, Kent, England, town centre are concerned that the opening of the Bluewater retail shopping centre at Dartford, England, will have an adverse affect on their businesses. Bluewater is due to open in 1999. New office buildings in Bromley are limited, with only two buildings offering available space. New buildings are planned for the Bromley South railway station. The development will incorporate railway buildings and leisure facilities such as a cinema, food outlets and a nightclub.
