Many surveyors in the UK expanded their operations into the international property market in order to withstand the decline in the domestic property industry during the early 1990s. Although the UK property market is improving it is very important that companies continue their work in the international arena. Surveying firms must retain a detailed knowledge of property in a variety of countries to fulfill clients needs. Companies from the UK will face competition in the international market not only from other chartered surveyors but from investment banks and fund managers.

The UK's leading chartered surveying firms saw domestic turnover rise by 21% in 1997 from 1996, according to the second Estates Gazette 100 league table. Each of the leading four companies - Chesterton International, DTZ Debenham Thorpe, Jones Lang Wootton and Savills - achieved profits of more than 5 million pounds sterling. In contrast, almost half the leading 100 chartered surveying firms achieved profits of less than 500,000 pounds sterling. The leading nine firms accounted for 47% of total income for the top 100 firms.

Several universities and colleges offer degrees and diplomas which have been accredited by the RICS. Universities teach land, hydrographic, quantity and building surveying. There are courses in rural property, minerals, and planning and development surveying. Courses are also available in marine resource management, and commercial and residential property.
