Adapt or be left behind

Article Abstract:

Many surveyors in the UK expanded their operations into the international property market in order to withstand the decline in the domestic property industry during the early 1990s. Although the UK property market is improving it is very important that companies continue their work in the international arena. Surveying firms must retain a detailed knowledge of property in a variety of countries to fulfill clients needs. Companies from the UK will face competition in the international market not only from other chartered surveyors but from investment banks and fund managers.

Survival of the fittest

Article Abstract:

A small number of surveying firms have retained a dominant position in the UK throughout the 20th century. Indeed, 10 of the surveying firms trading in some form at the beginning of the 20th century now hold two-thirds of the market. They include Chesterton, Jones Lang LaSalle, CB Hillier Parker and Lambert Smith Hampton. Many established firms have over recent years had to decide whether to seek to compete with the leading players as full-service businesses. Some decided to merge because they did not feel that they could be competitive alone.

Hands off my money

Article Abstract:

Surveyors may need to establish a client account for building society valuation fees, deposits, service charges, advance fees and rents. It is likely clients would wish their surveyors to open a client account so they are able to ensure their money is being kept separate from general accounts. A client would also be able to reclaim the money if the surveyors were declared bankrupt, as they are the beneficial owners of the money. There are stringent regulations ensuring client accounts cannot be used for unwarranted reasons.
