The concept of corporate infrastructure resources management (CIR) is rapidly gaining credence among corporations wherein diverse business functions of a company are managed by a corporate infrastructure manager. Under CIR, traditional functions of the CFO such as human resources and financial services are merged with corporate services and technology. In the case of Charles Schwab, the firm uses CIR to integrate the corporate infrastructure which translates to lower operating costs, retention of quality employees and increased employee productivity.

Real estate investment trusts (REIT) remain invaluable tools of investments for corporate finance departments. The REIT market is fast approaching maturety, leading to more stable investment opportunities for finance departments. The merger activity in REITs have increased the sector's assets from about $8 bil in 1997 to between $12 bil to $15 bil for 1999. The maturity of the sector can also be seen in its drift away from the volatile commercial real estate towards business.
