The great PostScript printer race: results of the first heat are in

Article Abstract:

Eight laser printers capable of running Adobe Systems' PostScript software are evaluated and compared. The printers are: Apple Computer's Laserwriter and Laserwriter Plus; The Laser Connection's PS Jet Plus; Qume's Scripten; Texas Instruments' Omnilaser 2115; Dataproducts' LZR-2665; Varityper's VT600; and Compugraphic's CG 400-PS. Among the questions a buyer should ask before purchasing a laser printer are: what kind of publication will be generated; what is the printer's speed; what fonts does the printer support; and how much memory does the printer provide? Other considerations include: paper handling capabilities; cost of supplies; ease of installation; and price. A sample test using lengthy text-intensive documents and shorter graphics-intensive documents was conducted on several laser printers. Test results are discussed.

Here are evaluations of 15 PostScript printers, including four PostScript-compatible printers, which range in price from $1,995 to $29,995. Important factors when buying a computer printer include speed, quality, and price. PostScript printers are usually slow because of the complicated code that they process. The PostScript controller of each printer is critical in determining performance, especially when a document requires font changes or extra graphics. The LZR 1260 from Dataproducts is the best printer for desktop publishing with medium-volume print requirements. The CG 400-PS is recommended for typographic variety.

PS Jet PostScript Laser Conversion Kit: The Laser Connection

Article Abstract:

The Laser Connection's PS Jet PostScript Laser Conversion Kit, costing $2,995, converts non-PostScript printers into PostScript-compatible printers. The PS Jet Plus printer, also from The Laser Connection, is an economically priced PostScript laser printer that uses a Canon engine. The conversion kit has an Appletalk port to work with a Macintosh, but does not have a parallel port to work with IBM PCs and compatibles. The PS Jet PostScript Laser Conversion Kit provides memory of 2Mbytes and resolution of 300 dpi. The kit also comes with four built-in fonts; additional fonts are available from The Laser Connection.
