The automotive past is prologue

Article Abstract:

Some well-established automakers are coming out with innovative designs for their new car models that go against their past-driven tradition. Models that have been arousing new interest worldwide include the Acura CL, Audi TT, BMW Z3, Mercedes All-Activity Vehicle, and Porsche Boxster, each of which are profiled. The approach of the new millennium is credited with generating much of the more forward-looking designs, and the US market is an increasingly important focus of the design efforts.

Bringing back the Beetle

Article Abstract:

Audi designers Jay Mays, Peter Schreyer and Freeman Thomas had to take an unorthodox approach in their efforts to sell their bosses, and sister company Volkswagen (VW), on the idea of a new VW Beetle. They used 'visual positioning' to design a car based on four key words: simple, honest, reliable and original. The new Beetle will be introduced in the 1999 model year.

Patrick le Quement: a visionary at the helm of Renault

Patrick le Quement is a member of the Renault management, reporting to the chairman and is the highest designer in any automobile manufacturing company.
