Picking winners

Article Abstract:

Basic information about Macintosh software that enhances the efforts of beginning desktop publishers is presented. Low-cost page layout programs are suitable only for users with modest goals, while more expensive, full-featured layout programs are needed for complex and demanding projects. Additions to a font library should be appropriate for the printer with which they are to be used. Adobe Type Manager displays truer on-screen type images, and can let users of QuickDraw laser printers print with PostScript fonts. Paint or draw programs satisfy basic graphics needs, but high-level graphics programs are needed for special applications. A separate word processing program is necessary for composing and editing text, and most such products have built-in spelling checkers. Many utility programs are available for such tasks as envelope addressing, managing clip-art collections, and protecting against computer viruses.
