Paperless publishing with DiskPaper

Article Abstract:

Farallon Computing's $149 DiskPaper multimedia publishing tool creates digital documents for distribution via floppy disk or Macintosh networks. Users receiving the documents are not required to own the same programs, the proper fonts or even DiskPaper itself. DiskPaper consists of two applications: DiskPaper Maker is a printer driver that allows the user to create documents; DiskPaper Reader allows the user to see DiskPaper documents, play sounds, perform searches or copy and paste portions of the document to other applications. The package occasionally fails to add sound notes to Microsoft Word 4.0 and MacDraw II documents. The feature for importing sound bytes created outside of the program into DiskPaper documents are unavailable for testing. Memory consumption can be a problem because sound bytes use large amounts of memory. DiskPaper requires a Mac Plus or higher and 1Mbyte of RAM. Farallon charges a $1,000 annual licensing fee for users who plan to distribute DiskPaper documents as part of a commercial transaction, although academic, work-group and in-house usage is not covered by the fee.
