Article Abstract:

Columbia TriStar Home Video worked with advertising consulting firm Ikon to create a promotional poster for its film 'One False Move' using only desktop publishing technology. Ikon first used thumbnail sketches, rough sketches and then color mock-ups of possible poster designs to find a memorable image to display the film's essence. Then the company took footage from the film and input the images into Adobe Photoshop, and then put the data into QuarkXPress. The designers made the tag line and billing block with Illustrator and saved them as EPS files, then combined the files with the Photoshop image. They made an 8- x 10-inch transparency from the Photoshop file and produced films for offset printing using an MDA film recorder. Finally, the posters were offset printed on standard 29 x 40-inch film poster paper.

Painting with pixels: natural-media painting software lets desktop designers create art with a handmade look

Article Abstract:

Several images demonstrate how computer graphics software packages can be successfully used to create naturalistic illustrations. The software enables computer artists to mimic watercolor, oil, charcoal, markers and other media. Some of the artists manipulate scanned photographs, while others paint from memory or from other images. Some of the most successful artwork using computer graphics tools is accomplished by artists and illustrators who produced similar effects with their usual, non-electronic tools and techniques. Details of how each image is created are described.
