Canon, Ricoh lasers set for full color

Article Abstract:

Color laser printers are still prohibitively expensive to produce, so Canon and Ricoh both plan to introduce laser copiers later in 1987. Both products will use color laser technology, together with a color scanner, to generate four-color copies with 400 dot-per-inch resolution in each color. Canon's Laser Color Copier will produce 6 copies per minute, while Ricoh's CIP-LA will produce 3.5 copies per minute. A Ricoh executive, commenting on the outlook for color printers, says that until laser printers that produce color sell for under $15,000, printers will be limited to specific applications such as medical technology and cartography.

Stepping Out ($95) is a new screen-utility program from Berkeley System Design. It is supposed to let you zoom in on part of a screen or enlarge part of a screen's image for purposes involving page makeup and graphics; in fact, the programs uses are limited. Magnifying the image up to 16 times its normal size is a degree of control that is called 'unsatisfactory' for fine typography or high-quality page design. Moreover, the way that the program scrolls to portions of an image beyond a screen's view when the cursor is moved to the edge of an application's window is visually disturbing.

Canon's stand-alone Express Desktop Publisher ($9,950) is a desktop publishing turnkey system that includes: computer, keyboard, monitor, printer, and scanner. The Canon Express uses the Jlaser printer controller that offers only two fonts. The Canon Express is ideal for corporate office publishing. The only way to create or import graphics on the Express Desktop Publisher is to scan the image, using Canon's Expression, a customized 'next-generation word processing' program and scanner software.
