Born-again publications

Article Abstract:

A number of print magazines are converting their pages into HTML for publication on the World Wide Web. There are many products available to convert a page layout file to HTML. HTML code defines text formatting, alignment and size of images, and establishes hypertext links to other Web sites. Although HTML tags can be entered manually in any word processor, HTML editors provide ready-made tags and some will do tagging automatically. HTML does have some design limitations, and basic formatting features are interpreted differently by various Web browsers. Electronic exchange conversion technology, such as Adobe Acrobat, give the publisher more control over the end result. These tools bypass HTML and merely place a picture of a document on the Web. Although accuracy is enhanced with this approach, these documents are less interactive and require a greater download time.

The shape of things to come: new 3-D packages allow you to achieve monumental effects with type

Article Abstract:

Three-dimensional (3D) type can have a significant impact on a document, graphic or screen display. Several software packages enable the user to create 3D type and apply a variety of effects to it. The programs include Adobe Dimensions, Pixar Typestry, Ray Dream's AddDepth and StrataType 3d, and such multimedia packages as Adobe Premier and Macromedia's MacroMind Director. The Font Bureau utilized Typestry and Dimensions to determine that there were four basic visual effects important to the creation of 3D type: the nature of the typeface design itself, extrusion of the type, modeling of the surface and beveling of the transition between two surfaces. The application of any combination of these effects constitutes a 'treatment,' which should reflect a theme for the type's application.

Book smart in XPress and PageMaker

Article Abstract:

Users that require chapter- or section-based documents when designing and constructing books, should consider Adobe Systems' PageMaker and QuarkXPress 4.0. The Book command streamlines the production and management of publications as well as producing long documents. In XPress, a book file is actually a floating palette that is labeled a book palette. Once documents have been added, the palette controls numbering the pages. Adobe's Book command in PageMaker is a straight forward function that collects and prints a series of publications. As specified, PageMaker can automatically number and print pages from file to file. Illustrated steps are included to guide users in using QuarkXPress's Book command.
