Best for basics

Article Abstract:

Silicon Beach Software's $199 Superpaint 2.0 is the best basic black-and-white graphics program for the Macintosh. The program's two-layer structure consists of a paint layer for creation of bit-mapped images and a draw layer for creation of lines and shapes. Superimposing paint and draw images is one of Superpaint's strong points. High-resolution text can be added to bit-mapped images. Text blocks can include various typefaces and point sizes, while characters can be slanted, flipped and otherwise manipulated. The Autotrace tool changes bit-mapped images into polygons or Bezier curves. The Airbrush tool controls the paint spray pattern, dot size and flow rate. Drawing tools can be 'plugged in' as needed or stored. Limited color has been added, as well as the ability to vary the eight basic shades. An upgrade from Version 1.0 costs $50. 1Mbytes of RAM is required, as is System 6.0 or later.

Special-effects smorgasbord: Cricket Paint

Article Abstract:

Cricket Software's $195 black-and-white paint-only program for the Macintosh, Cricket Paint 1.0, is recommended as a worthwhile purchase for its special effects. The program prints only bit-mapped art with jagged edges, and users can not combine high-resolution drawn objects with painted bit maps in the same document. Cricket Paint's key feature is Freshpaint, which allows users to draw an object with 'wet paint' that can be easily modified, but there are some limitations when using special tools. The program also has some innovative texture effects, such as the ability to create a 'linen' look in clothing. Keyboard commands are plentiful, and the program is easy to use and learn, but it lacks a dialog box for reducing and enlarging at specified percentages. Cricket Paint requires 1Mbyte of RAM, two floppy drives and is recommended for use on a system 6.0.2.

Playing catch-up: Macdraw II

Article Abstract:

Macdraw II ($395), graphics software from Claris Corp, is a simple program that combines high-resolution text and graphics. The program serves in various capacities: engineering or architectural plans; business graphics, such as fliers or charts; or presentation graphics. The product is not intended for computer-aided design (CAD) work. Macdraw II lacks sophisticated illustration capabilities, though it includes drafting aids and a powerful layering feature. Macdraw II is versatile and easy to use; but better, competitively priced specialized products exist.
